Weaving

I'm very lucky to have reconnected with a high school BFF over the last few years. She's an amazing artist from the Bay area named Meghan Shimek. She's an incredible weaver. She started weaving right around the time I was starting my pillows. She's doing so well and I'm so stoked for her.

When she's come to LA she's stayed with us and it's perfect because our boys are the same age and they play so nicely together. She's gifted my daughter and I looms and it has become quite the hobby around this house. During the last visit Meghan taught a class at Otherwild in Echo Park. I got to play around with a heddle and boy was that a game changer! If you'd like a high quality loom with a heddle Meghan sells them here on her site.

Anyhow, I decided to make several "mini" weavings to sell at Eastside Handmade this coming Saturday. Pictures below of how they turned out.

Eastside Handmade Spring Show!

It's that time again! My favorite market to be a part of is this coming Saturday, April 11th in Highland Park from 11am-5pm. Not familiar with Highland Park? Check out this article

Eastside Handmade happens a few times a year behind Shopclass (5215 York Blvd., LA 90042). It's a great gathering of artists and local makers all brought together by the amazing Sheryl Cancellieri

Next Saturday there are a gang of people coming to slang their goods. My good friend Katie of Katie Dean Jewelry and I will be sharing a table.

Shout out to a couple of my favorites:

Silk-Dyed Easter Eggs

Hosted a small art camp at my house this week during spring break. We did so many fun projects. One that I had never done before was dying eggs with silk. I found this tutorial video and away I went! Turned out pretty good ya?

Monsters Drawings: A Study in Resists

I've had a few awesome kids at my place for art camp during spring break this week. Today we did monster drawings with oil pastels and watercolors. I was asked a good question and I thought I'd do a quick blog post about it.

"What's a resist?"

I had to get a little creative when describing what a resist is. When, "A resist is something that won't take the color or paint you are putting on it..." didn't cut it I found myself defining it this way:

"Pretend the oil pastel is the good guy and the watercolor paint is the bad guy. The two are fighting each other and the bad guy wants to win [and leave his color on the paper] but the good guys are just too strong and in the end, they win. Their color is what sticks to the paper and not the watercolor "bad guys". The good guys are resisting the bad guys. The oil pastel is resisting the watercolor." This explanation seemed to do the trick and everyone had a fun time with this project.

Really Good

My dream is to be REALLY good at ONE thing.

But instead, I'm kind of good at a lot of things. I blame my mother for this blessing and curse. She has always been a jack of all trades but, unlike me, she's settled down into a nice graphic design career. Full-disclosure: I know practically NOTHING about photoshop. Maybe I'll make that a goal for this year.

For now, I'll keep doodling.
